Hey, Gantry Finished [[Alkaline Trio]] full bio using several sources, feel free to touch it up as you see fit. I'm going to work on Slapstick family tree bands and probably eventually a page ''Slapstick Family Tree'' of its own. [[User:Soco79|Soco79]]

:* looks good, you're kicking butt! I'm going to listen to the [[Jugheads Basement]] on [[The Vindictives]] this week and all the info there. I listened to before but didn't parse through for good chunks of DB information. I'll stick to the late 80s while keeping the 90s in your capable hands.
Awesome to see the news on the front page! Sorry I haven't been much of a presence as I once was on the wiki, but still plan on filling in the cracks that I created (e.g. band entries I posted but never did a bio, etc.)
Anyway, awesome work.

:* Thanks! No need to apologize, getting that TBF fire record inspired me to update after a long absence. Updated pages based on the record and the inserts with the show flyers, dates, etc. Got a [[Savage Beliefs]] and [[Negative Element]] record too, so those pages are updated recently. Any little bit helps, thanks per usual for all the work you've done! [[User:Gantry|Gantry]] ([[User talk:Gantry|talk]]) 23:43, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

'''The Bumpus Hounds''' is a 3 piece Chicago trio started by brothers Peter (aka. THE P!$ToL - Bass/lead vox) and Michael (aka. Dr. Snoopy - Guitar/bkgrd vox) Vercillo. They added Mike Webb as their drummer. Formed in late 2009, the band wanted to continue the tradition of the "Chicago Sound" of punk rock; started by predecessors like NAKED RAYGUN, PEGBOY, THE EFFIGIES, STRIKE UNDER, SLUDGEWORTH, etc. The band is focused on writing songs that are aggressive, but that pays attention to melody. Elements of that Chicago brand of punk rock include big guitar sound, edgey and machine like driven bass, thought provoking lyrics, interesting and non-cliched subject matter, and incorporating a "less is more" mentality.

The band has shared the stage with many local and national acts over the years; playing most every local venue. Dr. Snoopy is a an actual doctor (SEE ALSO: Daryl Wilson of THE BOLLWEEVILS, who is good friend of the band). He is a thoracic surgeon. This makes touring virtually non-existent; although the boys have played and still may do the occasional one-off show in Detroit, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, South Bend, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Iowa City, etc.

They have only one official recording, a 10 song EP released in 2011; and have been playing loads of new material since. The Band went on hiatus from late 2015 to early 2018 due to some legal troubles for leader/trouble-maker, THE P!$ToL; but they are back and better than ever. Look for the boys to tear up the stage and for new recordings very soon.

'''Skullface''' was (and remains) a largely enigmatic Chicago punk underground band that existed from circa 1995 - circa 2000. Although they had a loyal following, no one really knew who Skullface was, and those who did and were friends of the members largely helped keep the identities of the members private. The only publicity the allowed was their band name, and the classic skull logo.

They played a mix of grind-core punk and hardcore with a splattering of brass instruments and piano which gave them a unique but bizarre, sinister sound that most fans found a genius cross-breed of genres, while a smaller percentage found it obnoxious.

Although they had more material, they only released one DIY EP demo that was mostly on cassette, despite cassettes being out of date as by that time and CDRs being easily accessible. There was probably less than 100 of them, and there were no liner notes, only song names. They went on a short regional tour before breaking up 99 or 2000.

One on and off member was Kiki Martinelli (R.I.P.) who lived at [[El Rancho Orphanage]] who played the sax and the piano.

While a punk scene has always been present in the area (DuPage, Kane, Dekalb, Surrounding areas), this page is about the new wave of punk bands that emerged mainly in the 21st century and the sound that links many of them together. While the sound of the western suburbs punk scene can be traced back to the 1990s, it started to rise after the turn of the century. In some instances the poppier sound became popular nationwide in the 2000s (decade) but unlike most of the country, the sound is still very prominent in this area. While there isn’t as many punk venues out west, there are a ton of bars and DIY places that hold live music and many bands play house parties. Because many bands play at the same venues, many bands know each other well and often exchange members.

==Sound of Western Suburbs Punk==

Like much of the Chicago suburbs, pop punk is inescapable therefore the same is said in the western suburbs. Many of the bands stem from pop punk roots but many of them have a different approach. Many incorporate hardcore aspects to their live performances and bring a more agressive sound the the table. The use of guitar tends to favor simplistic solos and rhythm on top of a fast based hardcore rhythm section. Many compare the sound as similar to that of 90s and 00s Green Day but often with more rawness to it. Considering the time frame, production value on many recordings tends to be high quality than past decades.

==Culture of Western Suburbs Punk==

Throughout the area the straight edge culture has prominance but isn’t the entire culture. There isn’t a set unique fashion either. While some go a more traditional 70s punk style, some chose to remain in casual wear. At shows, moshing is the norm for most bands and most venues accept it with the main exception being Penny Road Pub. Because many of the bands are connected in some way shape or form, it has become a tradition to meet up at local Steak & Shakes and Denny’s after playing or watching a show.

'''Bet The Levels''' was a band formed in the western suburbs of Chicago in 2012 by Dan Skretteburg, Brendyn Wirtz, Sam Donner, and Tyler Dalora. The bands sound stemmed from punk roots and bands ranging from the Ramones, Green Day, Weezer, and many more. They played many notable venues in the western suburbs that hosted punk and pop punk shows in the 2010s such as Pub Yahoo and The Waiting Room.

In 2014, the original lineup released their debut album, ''Don’t Punch The Driver'', on Bandcamp. It was produced by Brendyn. Songs from the album were played in concert regularly. Songs such as “Converse Man” and “GE Days” were fan favorites and played at almost every show. After the release of ''Don’t Punch The Driver'', Tyler and Sam left the band and were replaced with Mason Brewner on bass guitar and Jake Herlihey in drums. Their EP, ''Josh’s Nightmare'', was released in 2015 and featured better production as much of it was recorded at Morley House Studios. Songs like “Cavaties At Midnight” became concert favorites. Bet The Levels split up in 2017 with Brendyn Wirtz focusing on his other projects (Bad Jokes and [[Paper Towels]]) as did Mason Brewner (The Deathstrokes) and Dan Skretteburg (solo material).

In August 2018, the band reunited and played a final show at The Waiting Room in Naperville.

'''Paper Towels''' is a solo project created by Brendyn Wirtz, formerly of [[Bet The Levels]], in 2017. Paper Towels is known for having a very different sound from many of his other projects as well as bands from the same scene. Paper Towels’ sound stems from punk and pop punk roots but is known to incorperate many electronic and synth sections and leads throughout most of his music with some songs going full electronic punk.

Paper Towels was created by Brendyn Wirtz in 2017 after Bet The Levels split. It didn’t take long for the music to make it’s way in Spotify and score him shows across the suburbs, most notably The Waiting Room. As of 2019, two EPs (''The Absorbant EP, Year of The Dog'') and a few singles are available to listen too. Paper Towels is in many ways one of the most unique sounding artists when compared to their other local bands in the scene.

'''Lawrence Arms''', or The Lawrence Arms, despite not formidably forming until [[1999]], are a [[Slapstick Family Tree]] band, and have been very revered by the Chicago scene since their beginning. They began after first tier Slapstick Family Tree bands [[The Broadways]], [[Baxter]], and [[Tricky Dick]] disbanded.
Brendan Kelly, frontman for [[Slapstick]] and [[The Broadways]] is the bassist and lead vocalist, Neil Hennessy is the drummer, and Chris McCaughan is the guitarist and other vocalist.

Lawrence Arms has produced music with much of the same ingredients as Slapstick and their other projects: Sometimes politically charged pop punk with an edge of grit and aggression. "Lawrence" is a reference to Lawrence Avenue on the north side of Chicago - evident in early songs.

Their first album, A Guided Tour of Chicago, was released by Asian Man in November of 1999, and they toured with NOFX in [[2006]]. They have released a bevy of records, and in late [[2013]] they signed to Epitaph, a long earned accolade after 14 years of endurance.

'''Sharon Tate's Baby''' was a hardcore punk band from Chicago led by [[Kenny Black]] formed in early 1987 after he left [[Zoetrope]]. Ron Code asked to audition for them because Black needed a new singer. The original singer named the band and tried to commit suicide not long after. They released a demo in 1989 and played on the [[WZRD]] radio show the same year on the first of January. They played all of the released tracks except for "Anyone Can Be a Boss". The band broke up around 1993.

Sharon Tate's Baby has played with the Exploited, UK Subs, Circle Jerks, Agnostic Front, and many more.

'''Zoetrope''' (pronounced e-trope), was actually a metal band, but deserves recognition within the Chi Punk Archives because they were active participants in the mid- to late 80's hardcore scene. Not to mention that a couple of the band members were regulars at the old punk club, [[O'Banion's]]. The band was influenced by the likes of 7 Seconds, [[Articles of Faith]], [[Rights of the Accused]], [[Life Sentence]], [[Out of Order]], Die Kruezen and created their own form of hardcore thrash, which they dubbed, "street metal." They played alongside the hardcore bands of the day and were responsible for creating a short period of unity between the local punk and metal scenes. After the band broke up and former member went on to other things, Kevin Michael reformed the band with new members, but it really wasn't the same. Barry Stern went on to play in the metal band, "Trouble." Ken Black went on to play in [[Sharon Tate's Baby]]. Calvin Humphrey went on to play with [[M.O.S.H]]. (Mean Obnoxious 'Shroom Heads) Sadly, Barry Stern passed away on April 2, [[2005]], due to complications from recent hip-replacement surgery. He was only 45 years old.
* ''Amnesty'' and ''A Life of Crime'' were reissued in Europe on CD by Century Media in the late '90's when that label remastered and reissued the entire Combat Records catalog in Europe. The ''Amnesty'' reissue contains the ''Metal Log'' demos as bonus tracks.
* [[Kenny Black]] and [[Barry Stern]] produced the first [[Life Sentence]] record.
* [[Louis Svitek]] was credited as the guitarist on ''A Life Of Crime'', but according to [[Kevin Michael]]'s notes on the CD reissue, Kevin and [[Kenny Black]] played all the guitar parts. Louis joined the band after Kenny left Los Angeles (where the band was recording) and returned home to sort out substance abuse issues.
* Zoetrope referred to their sound as "Street Metal".

'''Ring 13''' were a high-school-aged punk band from Dekalb from about [[1983]] to [[1986]]. During their existance, Ring 13 recorded a self-released cassette tape and two tracks on the [[Dial-a-Trance]] compilation. Their most memorable shows outside of Dekalb were [[Articles of Faith]]'s final show and a show at [[The Metro]] with [[Out of Order]]. [[Mike Crown]] and [[Steve Ross]] from [[The Subverts]] occassionally filled in for members. Over 20 years later, the complete Ring 13 catalog will shortly be released on CD by members of the band.

== Recent activity ==
On August 22nd [[2007]], Ring 13 played their first show in 22 years at Ottos in Dekalb.

Ring 13 reformed on August 22nd in [[2009]] at the [[Abbey Pub]] in Chicago. Ring 13 performed in Chicago for the first time in 24 years along with [[Blatant Dissent]], [[Subverts]], [[Happy Hunting]] and Otis Ball and The Chains.

Ring 13 will be playing a couple shows in August [[2017]] as their 1984 cassette has just made its vinyl debut.{{ref|a}}First up will be the Eagles Club in Minneapolis 8/25 where they will be playing with Dan's son Jackson as a special guest. Speaking of special guests, Kerry Martinez and Chip Hanna will be joining Ring 13 for both shows as well. Kerry has played with Shattered Faith, U.S. Bombs, Lifestyle, Bad Luck Charms]and Roger Miret and the Disasters. Chip currently plays with TSOL and has played with the Weirdos, One Man Army and the Berlin 3. On 8/26 Ring 13 will be at the Liar's Club in Chicago. It's Cornfest in Dekalb both of these days, so after you've had your fill of corn, please consider a short road trip to come see DeKalb's own punk rockers, Ring 13.

Mark Panick (born August 28, 1956) is a musician, bandleader and songwriter best known for fronting the underground rock groups [[Bonemen of Barumba]] and Razorhouse.

== Early Life ==

Mark Panick was born in Chicago, IL on August 28, 1956. He grew up on the south side of Chicago and in the western suburbs of Lombard and Villa Park. His first band, a three-piece, was called the 64th Street Wild Things and their lone gig was a pizza party when Panick was in the fourth grade. As a young adult he was active in Chicago’s late 70’s/early 80’s punk/new wave scene, frequenting the nightclubs [[La Mere Vipere]], [[Neo]] and [[Exit]].

== Professional Life ==

Panick co-founded Bonemen of Barumba with Tom Jonusaitis in an alley in New Orleans during Mardi Gras in 1980 and the band went on to release two EPs, 1981’s ''Bonemen of Barumba'' (which [[Steve Albini]] described as "Barbeque [sic] music from hell") and 1983’s ''Driving the Bats Thru Jerusalem'' (described as “ballsy and primitive” by Trouser Press), and one LP, 1985’s ''Icons'', on the Chicago/Philadelphia imprint Fever, which was distributed by the larger independent label Enigma Records. The Bonemen of Barumba track “Thick Promise” appeared on the 1982 cassette compilation Sub Pop 7 and the tracks “Barumba Intro” and “Government Money” received airplay on BBC Radio One’s The John Peel Show on March 3, 1982. The band also received favorable press in the Los Angeles Reader, OP Magazine, New Music Report, Matter, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Illinois Entertainer.

Bonemen of Barumba were frequently compared to the English post-punk quintet The Pop Group and played their first show at Chicago’s [[Club 950 Lucky Number]]. Subsequent live shows found the band performing at [[Medusas]] in Chicago, at I-Beam in San Francisco, CA (where they supported Xmal Deutschland) and at Music Machine in Los Angeles, CA opening for Tones on Tail. They also headlined NYC’s Danceteria (with 10,000 Maniacs as an opener), supported The Cramps at Chicago’s [[Stages]] (a precursor to [[Cabaret Metro]]), opened for Shriekback at Chicago’s Vic Theater, supported Alien Sex Fiend at [[McGreevys]] in Glenview, IL, opened for The Alarm at [[Tuts]] in Chicago, supported Flesh for Lulu at Cabaret Metro, and opened for The Sisters of Mercy at Exit Chicago. While fronting Bonemen of Barumba, Panick was in a short-lived group called Minority of One with [[Jeff Pezzati]] (vocalist for [[Naked Raygun]]).

In 1987, Panick launched his next project, Chac Mool, after a fruitful writing session with house music wunderkind Dean Anderson. The short-lived group, which featured members of the Revolting Cocks, KMFDM and Sister Machine Gun, recorded a single entitled “Sex Sells,” which was released under the moniker Xipetotec by Trax Records in 2011.

Panick’s current band Razorhouse had its first wave of live activity between 1991 and 1993, notably supporting the Revolting Cocks and Killing Joke at the Vic Theater in Chicago, IL on New Year’s Eve, 1991, with a line-up that featured Panick on vocals backed by members of Slammin’ Watusis, Stabbing Westward, Liquid Soul, Spies Who Surf and Evil Clowns. The current lineup of Razorhouse, which has released two EPs, 2013’s ''Codex Jun'' and 2015’s ''Codex Du'' (co-produced by Howie Beno ([[Ministry]], Black Asteroid) and Danny McGuinness (Ex Senators, Coven of Thieves)), features Panick on vocals and guitar, David Suycott (Robert Pollard, Stabbing Westward) on drums, Jim DeMonte (The Insiders) on bass, Tommi Zender on guitar and Dan Moulder on keyboards.

== Other Bands/Affiliations ==

Mark Panick co-wrote the song “King of the Hill” with Nicholas Tremulis and has been affiliated with the bands Judas Horse, Black Friar’s Social Club and the Tom Waits tribute act Divine Prophets of Vaudeville.

== Personal Life ==

Mark Panick lives with his partner Nan Warshaw (co-founder of Bloodshot Records) and their son in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood.

'''Naked Raygun''' was one of the first, one of the longest running and one of the best Chicago punk bands. They are considered by a large majority to be the most important band in the history of Chicago punk. Raygun was active (in various lineups) from [[1980]] to [[1992]], along with reunion shows in [[1997]]. In late [[2006]] Raygun reformed and is still active as of late [[2015]]. They were one of the few bands to span the entire decade of the 80s and played with or helped bring along most of the acts during that time.
== History ==

=== 1980 ===

[[Image:Naked raygun-wide.jpg|right|400px]]

Naked Raygun began in February of 1980 when Marko Pezzati and Santiago Durango, who were both students at the University of Illinois at Chicago, met at [[O'Banions]]. Distressed about the lack of punk bands in Chicago, they decided to form a group. Jim Colao--a friend of Santiagos from UIC--joined the band briefly, but left almost immediately after joining. Many singers were tried, including Jim Colao's girlfriend until Marko enlisted his younger brother Jeff, who at the time was singing in a cover band, Condor, and had "an afro three miles wide". After obtaining a more punk-rock hairdo, Jeff Pezzati started practicing with Marko and Santiago at [[222 S. Morgan St.]], playing their first gig shortly thereafter in June. At this point they used the name [[Negro Commando]]. Shortly thereafter Bobby Strange signed up on drums and they recorded a demo, which would eventually be included on the [[Basement Screams]] CD reissue. The band's first gig as Naked Raygun was in August at the original [[Oz]]. Their third gig was on October 5 in Detroit, at a club called Nunnzio's; when the rest of the band went to pick up Strange, they found he had pawned his drum kit to buy drugs. They retrieved his drums and made the gig, but the audience walked out on them. Strange left in December, and the band tried out various replacements. One short-term replacement was John Lundin, who quickly switched over to keyboards. For their New Years Eve gig at [[Oz]], Jim Colao rejoined as the full-time drummer.

The origin of the band's name remains somewhat unclear. According to a 2006 interview in Alternative Press, Marko Pezzati claimed it was chosen more or less at random, although he had insisted the name include "nude" or "naked". However, in the same interview, Durango stated he came up with the name as a tribute to the Sex Pistols. Although many believed the band's name was a play on "Ronald Reagan", this is apparently not the case.

=== 1981-1982 ===
[[Image:NakedPezzati.jpg|right|thumb|Naked Pezzati @ Tuts, 1981]]

With a stable lineup in place, Naked Raygun began to play regularly in Chicago. Initially the band played primarily loft parties around UIC, but soon began regular gigs at [[Oz]]. In March of 1981, Raygun recorded live tracks for the [[Busted at Oz]] comp - the first time Raygun appeared on vinyl. Marko Pezzati left the band in 1981 (likely April/May, from [[Coolest Retard|CR]] 13&14) and was replaced by original Silver Abuse member Camilo Gonzalez. John Lundin left April/May 1981. Because he was not replaced, Naked Raygun ditched the keyboards and became a four piece. The band closed out 1981 by playing a New Year's Eve gig at [[O'Banions]] with [[Trial by Fire]] (according to [[CR]] #18). By mid-1982, [[John Haggerty]] began joining the band onstage to play saxophone and occasional 2nd guitar. A [http://www.dementlieu.com/users/obik/arc/effigies/int_dc2.html review] of their July 4th show at [[Exit]] actually calls Haggerty Raygun's "new guitarist/saxophonist".

In this period, Raygun's music was very experimental and quite different from the more straight-ahead Buzzcocks-influenced punk sound that would later bring them fame. Durango, in particular, would frequently experiment with his guitar sound, changing nearly from gig to gig. In a [[1992]] [http://petdance.com/actionpark/bigblack/press/mrr112.php interview], [[Steve Albini]] raved "I mean, they were so weird back then. Totally left field. Going to see them live at that time was totally invigorating because they were so damn weird. It was like a space age rockabilly band. With this bizarre jungle drumming going on. And periodically they would take too much drugs or whatever, and Santiago would come out with this completely underwater guitar sound. It would just flatten everybody." Albini later wrote an extended paean to the early Raygun incarnation in the liner notes for [[Basement Screams]]. Frustratingly, very little recorded output exists from this period, save for the [[222 S. Morgan St.]] demo, four songs on [[Busted at Oz]], a few poor-quality demo tracks on the posthumous [[Last of the Demohicans]] CD, and [[Basement Screams]].

=== 1983 ===

[[Image:LR1-Raygun.jpg|left|250px|thumb|The ultra-rare Durango and Haggerty lineup]]

In January 1983, [[John Haggerty]] joined Raygun on guitar. He had played sax on ''Swingo'' for [[Basement Screams]], and occasionally joined Raygun onstage. This two-guitar lineup would exist only for a few months, but apparently put on some legendary shows (including a show on January 21, 1983 at the [[Metro]], reviewed in [http://www.chicagopunkpix.com/LastRites/LR1.pdf Last Rites #1].) According to Haggerty, the band briefly discussed adding his guitar parts to the already-recorded [[Basement Screams]], but in the end decided to release it as originally recorded. [[Santiago Durango]] later said that he had already decided to leave the band, and asked Haggerty to join as his eventual replacement. In March 1983, the band embarked on their first [http://www.dementlieu.com/~obik/arc/other/nakedraygun_mrr19.html tour], a 10-day East Coast swing in March including a show opening for [http://www.missionofburma.com/home.html Mission of Burma] in Washington DC. This tour took place before [[Basement Screams]] had been released; it's not clear if Durango was still in the band for the tour, as he left Raygun to join [[Big Black]] sometime in 1983 ([[Matter]] #4 from July said he was "ex-Naked Raygun"). Ironically, [[Jeff Pezzatti]] was playing bass in [[Big Black]] at the time. The [[Basement Screams]] EP was finally released in July or August.

During this time, Durango and both Pezzati brothers lived in a coach house at [http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=1129+West+Drummond,+Chicago,+IL 1129 West Drummond] in the Lincoln Park neighborhood (according to the liner notes of [[Last of the Demohicans]]). [[Steve Albini]] described the "Naked Raygun house" as a central part of the Chicago punk scene during this time. It was at this house where Big Black's lineup formed, when Durango was distracted from watching a football game by the sounds of Pezzati and Albini practicing in the basement, and asked if he could play along with them.

With Haggerty on lead guitar, the band recorded [[Throb Throb]] in the summer of 1983, which because of funding would not get released until [[1985]]. The [[Flammable Solid]] 7-inch, containing two songs from the album and an alternative mix of "Libido", was released in late 1983.

===1984===

[[Image:NR-FirstSpicerShow.jpg|right|250px|thumb|Flyer for Eric Spicer's first show]]

Though Colao played on Throb Throb, he left the band in the summer of 1984 before the record was released. He left under less than amicable circumstances, as he disagreed with the rest of the band about going on an West Coast tour before releasing Throb Throb to raise funds. Colao felt that going on a cross-country tour with no record to sell was a financial mistake, and wanted to play only larger local gigs until they had the cash to release Throb Throb. Colao was replaced by former [[DV8]] drummer [[Eric Spicer]]. In a posting on his [http://www.myspace.com/sonofaraygun MySpace page], Spicer joked that he wound up joining the band solely because "I just made sure I never missed a practice." Spicer's first show was on July 14 at [[Tuts]]. Despite changing drummers and encountering delays in releasing [[Throb Throb]], Raygun steadily gained popularity and toured the Midwest (in the summer) and the West Coast (in September/October), and opened for the Ramones at the 5000-seat [[Aragon Ballroom]] in Chicago. Though still not having released a full-length album at this point, Raygun did release songs on the "Code Blue" cassette compilation and [[WNUR]]'s [[The Middle of America Compilation]]. Many of the songs that would make up their next LP [[All Rise]] had already been written by this point, as evidenced on Jason Willis's audience recording of the [http://scarstuff.blogspot.com/2006/02/naked-raygun-live-at-vfw18-in-kc-mo.html August 11, 1984 show at the VFW#18 in Kansas City]. As the band gained wider acclaim, [[Jeff Pezzati]] eventually decided to leave [[Big Black]] in late 1984 to focus solely on Raygun.

=== 1985 ===

[[Throb Throb]] was finally released in early 1985, followed by East Coast gigs in April and June. The album was very well received and established the band as one of the top American post-punk bands; a review in [http://www.operationphoenixrecords.com/mrrissue23.html Maximumrocknroll] pegged them as "one of the most important bands in the country". By this point, Raygun was becoming a huge draw in Chicago, graduating from clubs like the [[Cubby Bear]] and [[Tuts]] to regularly playing the [[Cabaret Metro]]. Raygun also began what would become a hometown tradition by playing a Thanksgiving show at Metro--infamously, Pezzati took a chainsaw to a turkey onstage and threw the remains into the audience.

[[Camilo Gonzalez]] played on the tours after [[Throb Throb]] was released, but subsequently left the band and was replaced by [[Pierre Kezdy]]. Kezdy joined shortly before [[All Rise]] was recorded, but did not contribute any songs to the record, which was mostly written by Pezzati and Haggerty. Although according to a fanzine interview the band was targeting a Christmas release, [[All Rise]] did not hit the stores until [[1986]].

===1986===

[[All Rise]] was released in the spring of [[1986]] to nearly unanimous praise, garnering rave reviews from everyone from alternative media stalwarts like Trouser Press to the New York Times. The first to feature the Pezzati/Haggerty/Kezdy/Spicer lineup, this album is still generally considered the definitive Raygun album. Although by this point the Chicago punk scene had splintered somewhat, Raygun continued to be immensely popular, the only band that could bridge the gap between older scenesters and hardcore punk kids. The band played several high profile all-ages gigs at the [[Metro]], one of which (9/14/1986) was vividly memorialized by [[Greg Dunlap]] in the liner notes to the 1999 reissue of [[All Rise]].

===1987===

The band had completed their contract with [[Homestead Records]] by releasing [[All Rise]], and early in 1987 released Pierre Kezdy's [[Vanilla Blue]] as a single on their own [[Sandpounder Records]]. Subsequently, ex-Minor Threat guitarist Lyle Preslar signed the band to a three-album contract with Caroline Records. Raygun recorded [[Jettison]], which would be their first Caroline release, in Chicago with producers [[Iain Burgess]] and Larry Sturm. [[Pierre Kezdy]] and [[Eric Spicer]] also contributed songwriting to the album; as they had both joined shortly before [[All Rise]] was recorded, they had not written songs previously for Raygun.

The band had become such a huge local draw that they could no longer play the 1100-capacity [[Metro]], and moved up to the 2500-person [[Riviera]] during this year. The November 20, 1987 Riviera gig was professionally recorded by [[Tim Powell]] of Metro Mobile recording, and several songs (including their cover of Stiff Little Fingers' "Suspect Device") would be released on [[Jettison]] and as bonus tracks on the 1999 album reissues. (Powell had previously recorded the band for [[Busted at Oz]] with a completely different lineup and, according to [[Jeff Pezzati]], only 30 people in the audience.)

Despite receiving critical acclaim and drawing big crowds in Chicago, Raygun's members still held down day jobs (Pezzati worked at a design engineering firm, Spicer at Kinko's, and Haggerty tended bar), which perhaps contributed to the relatively small amount of touring they did. The band regularly played New York City and Washington DC, and would play weekend gigs around the Midwest, but as John Haggerty would later note, "we didn't get out of town very much, probably less than what most people think" (Alternative Press interview, 2006). Certainly Raygun toured much less than contemporaries such as [http://www.dementlieu.com/~obik/arc/blackflag/1984.html Black Flag] and [http://www.thirdav.com/hd_discog/dates.html Husker Du]. The inability (or reluctance) to tour more would later become a bone of contention for Haggerty in particular.

===1988===

After the release of [[Jettison]] in May, Raygun did an extensive East Coast tour, playing 25 gigs in 30 days (according to an interview in [http://www.dementlieu.com/~obik/arc/other/nakedraygun_id14.html Ink Disease fanzine]). A shorter West Coast tour followed, including a gig at the famed [http://www.924gilman.org/index.html 924 Gilman Street] club in Berkeley. (How the band members coped with the no-alcohol policy at Gilman Street remains unclear.) [[Jettison]] was also well-received, with many reviews noting that the band had evolved toward a more varied sound, thanks to all four members contributing songs. Later that year, Raygun would record their second album for Caroline, [[Understand]].

===1989===

Raygun returned to [[Metro]] for the record release show for [[Understand]] on April 22. Following the release, the band finally made it to Europe for the first time in their career, playing a 5 week series of gigs across the continent. A highlight of the tour came at their gig in London (5/19/1989), when Steve Diggle of the Buzzcocks joined them onstage for the encore. Several songs from the June 4, 1989 gig at AJZ in Verden, Germany would eventually be released on [[Last of the Demohicans]].

Though it was not well known at the time, tensions within the band had been building over the past year. [[John Haggerty]], in particular, had become increasingly dissatisfied for a number of reasons. Haggerty wanted to quit his day job, tour more, and generally make the band a full-time pursuit, and felt frustrated by the other members' reluctance to do so. In interviews after Raygun broke up, Haggerty also spoke of feeling that the band had stagnated musically. In a 1999 interview, [[Jeff Pezzati]] tacitly agreed, saying that he had fallen into the trap of writing too many songs around Haggerty's big-guitar sound.

A major source of conflict involved business matters. [[Karen Bemis]], [[Jeff Pezzati]]'s longtime girlfriend who he married in 1988, had been acting as the band's manager for several years, and Haggerty, Spicer, and Kezdy were apparently not very involved in the financial side of the band. Although the details are unclear (and, in fairness, Bemis has never told her side of the story), Haggerty felt that "Jeff and Karen pretty much called all the shots" regarding band matters, and Kezdy agreed that "(Bemis) was getting paid for things she had nothing to do with" (Alternative Press interview, 2006).

Haggerty attempted to voice his concerns to the other band members, but felt ignored; he would later say that "Jeff started to think of the band as 'his' band, and I wanted to think of the band as 'our' band, and ultimately, that's a deal-breaker". He quit in August 1989. Spicer, who was also angry at Pezzati for failing to keep them informed about money issues, also wanted to quit but was talked into staying on by Kezdy.

The remaining band members quickly recruited a new guitarist, [[Bill Stephens]], who had previously played in [[Product 19]] opening for Raygun at Metro. With an East Coast tour already booked, Stephens only had a week to learn the material, but stepped in without difficulty. The [[Chicago Sound]] bootleg CD documents one of Stephens' early gigs with the band.

===1990===

Having decided to carry on without Haggerty, the band remained active throughout 1990, and toured Europe again in May of 1990. [[Raygun...Naked Raygun]] was recorded during 1990 with producer Keith Auerbach. [[Pierre Kezdy]] described the recording sessions as "sort of semi-catastrophic" (Ink Disease interview 1990), perhaps portending the chilly reception that was to come. When the album was released in October 1990, it received generally mediocre reviews, mostly centering around the muddy sound and relatively uninspiring songwriting. [[Bill Stephens]] also was widely criticized simply for not being [[John Haggerty]]. [[Eric Spicer]] concedes now that "it wasn't great--the sound was all wrong", and [[Raygun...Naked Raygun]] certainly pales in comparison with the standard set by [[All Rise]] and [[Jettison]].

===1991-1992===

With [[Raygun...Naked Raygun]], the band had completed their contract with Caroline Records. Raygun continued to play local shows and do short tours during 1991, and played at [[Metro]] in July as part of the club's 9th anniversary celebration. However, by this point the band members' enthusiasm was clearly waning. Spicer would later say, "(the band) was becoming like a second job", and Stephens added "it just became this side thing". Somewhat ironically, by the end of 1991, the music that Raygun had pioneered and kept vital throughout the 1980's was becoming wildly popular, and other Chicago bands were starting to gain national recognition.

In early 1992, the band entered the studio to record four new songs, which would become known as "the last demo". By this point, both Spicer and Stephens had decided to leave the band, and Kezdy and Pezzati did not attempt to dissuade them. After one final show at the Riviera, Raygun called it quits. The band never issued an official announcement--they simply stopped playing shows.

For the next few years, most of the band members remained completely inactive musically. [[Pierre Kezdy]] joined John Haggerty in [[Pegboy]] in 1994, but Pezzati, Spicer, and Stephens essentially retired.

===1997 Reunion===

In March 1997, the final band lineup decided to re-record the "last demo", since the original tapes had been lost. The four songs were recorded with [[Steve Albini]] and subsequently released on the collection [[Last of the Demohicans]] in mid-1997. The band then re-formed and played three sold-out reunion shows at [[Metro]] on November 29-30 and December 1. Two shows were initially announced, but they sold out so quickly that a third had to be added. These shows, the first Raygun gigs in Chicago in five years, would eventually be documented on the [[Free Shit]] album.

At the time, rumors circulated that the band was writing new songs and preparing to record another album. However, these proved untrue, as after the reunion shows the band disappeared again. [[Jeff Pezzati]] formed [[The Bomb]] in 1999, Stephens continued playing in [[The Tarts]], and Kezdy held down the bass spot in [[Pegboy]]; Spicer did not play in any other bands after Raygun.

=== 1999 ===

In 1999, [[Quarterstick Records]] re-released all of the NR albums, including the long out-of-print [[Basement Screams]]. All the albums, except [[Raygun...Naked Raygun]] came with bonus tracks and extensive liner notes and photographs. Despite the fact that most people never heard Basement Screams until 7+ years after their breakup, the opening track ''I Lie'' became one of the most well-known Raygun anthems. More reunion shows were rumored, but never took place for unclear reasons.

=== 2006 Reunion Show ===

[[Image:NR-JBTV2006.jpg|left|200px]]

On November 5th, [[2006]] Raygun played their first show in over 9 years at [http://myspace.com/riotfest2005 Riot Fest 2006]. The lineup was the final one - Pezzati, Kezdy, Stephens and Spicer. It created quite a buzz and folks from all over the US (and Europe!) traveled to Chicago to see Raygun.

To promote their show, Raygun made their first televsion appearance in 10 years on October 19th, 2006 on local Chicago music show [http://www.jbtvonline.com/ JBTV]. The show also had a bunch of videos from fellow Riot Fest acts. Part two of the Raygun interview appeared on on the October 25th show of JBTV.

Raygun also played a secret, invite-only show at the Cobra Lounge in Chicago on October 19 as a warmup for the Riot Fest show--their first gig since the 1997 reunion shows at the Metro. Video of three songs ([[Vanilla Blue]], Knock Me Down, and the set closer Managua) are up on [http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=naked%2Braygun&search=Search YouTube].

On November 3rd, Raygun did an short interview and played live on Q101's ''Morning Fix''. The interview was at 8am and they played [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK_--ieAfzQ Vanilla Blue] towards the end of the hour. On November 4th, they played another warmup show at Subterranean (with 4 Star Alarm, [[The Bomb]] and The Briefs) under the pseudonym Holyy Lazarski Nahane.

=== 2007 Shows and DVD ===
[[Image:Rf2007.jpg|right|85px]]

In January 2007, Raygun announced that they are officially back together and began shows again. They played April 27th at the House of Blues in Chicago (with [[The Effigies]], Bollweevils and Shot Baker) and May 4th/5th at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis. They were joined in Minneapolis by [[The Methadones]], Shot Baker and Dillinger Four.

For the late Chicago show, Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers joined Raygun on stage to perform two songs - ''Suspect Device'' and ''Alternative Ulster''. For the late show in Chicago and both shows in Minneapolis, Raygun was joined onstage by [[Dan Schafer]] to perform [[Sludgeworth]]'s ''Someday''.

They also announced that a CD/DVD of their Riot Fest weekend will be released on November 6th, 2007. It includes footage of their main show as well as the warmup shows.

On October 26th, 2007 Naked Raygun played at [http://www.thefestfl.com/ The Fest 6 in Florida]. Raygun also headlined the first night of Riot Fest 2007 on Saturday, November 17. At the end of November, Raygun embarked on a West Coast tour, playing 10 shows in 10 days. They were joined by Swinging Utters and Shot Baker, playing gigs in Washington, Oregon and California. On December 22, 2007 Naked Raygun played a special XMas show at Reggie's Rock Club which was was preceded by a playing of their DVD.

=== 2008 ===

On January 12, 2008 Raygun played their first show in Detroit in over 15 years at Small's Bar. In March, Raygun played at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. On March 15 Raygun played a set at Cobra Lounge to celebrate its 2nd anniversary. [[Haunted Town Records]] released remastered versions of [[Throb Throb]] and [[All Rise]] on vinyl.

=== 2009 ===

Raygun plays two shows at the House of Blues on January 2nd and 3rd. On August 29th Raygun played a free Riot Fest preview show at a practice space. In September Raygun embarked on a small east coast tour with Shot Baker and Paint it Black. On October 9th, Raygun headlined a Riot Fest show at the [[Metro]] along with fellow 80s punks [[Rights of the Accused]] and [[No Empathy]].

AnarchistiCookie: I copied this from ChicagoPunk:About since that one is more up to date, I hope you don't mind.

In case you haven't guessed, this is a site about the history of the Chicago punk scene. Anyone can create, edit or change any page on this site. It's by the people for the people of the Chicago punk scene.

== Scope ==

Though I focus myself on the early part of the scene (70s to late 80s) info on bands from the 90s are welcome as well. The inspiration for this site was the focus on the bands, people and venues that have little-to-no information available on the web - a good chunk of this applies to the 90s as well. What I don't really want is to focus on the current bands that have been around since the Internet age. These bands have their own site and an online presence since they started.

== How to edit ==

People should not be afraid to post any and all information they can. If you have any questions, just ask. A quick rundown:

Step one is to create an account. Pretty easy to do, answer the simple question that's there to avoid spammers. Once you have an account you are ready to edit!

Every single page has an "edit" tab which shows the page's full content, which can be added or amended till your heart's content. If you make a mistake, every page has a "history" tab that lists the complete editing history of that page. So it's easy to go back or revert an error...

If you want to start a new page, simply search for an item. If there is no page, you'll get an option to create it. You can also "link" to any other page by putting brackets around the text. So if you're writing a page about a member of [[Naked Raygun]], simply write it as <nowiki>[[Naked Raygun]]</nowiki> and their page will link back to the Naked Raygun.

If you are more of a casual browser than an editor, no problem. The pages of interest for you are the search area, the random page and recent changes. Recent changes will show all the edits on the pages in the last few weeks, it's also a great way to keep track of pages you are working on.

Right now, what we need most is content. The more people adding/editing pages, the better the pages become and the more useful of a reference the site is. I'm doing everything I can, but I am just one person and my knowledge of the scene is VERY limited compared to most of you fine folks.

OK, I doubt anyone is reading by this point but feel free to ask any questions or request a page to be added. Thanks again - Gantry (gantry at gmail.com)

Tuts was what the Quiet Knight, a famous Chicago folk club, turned into after the folk scene petered out in the late 70's. Skafish played numerous shows at the Quiet Knight before the change in name and direction, and some national acts (like Talking Heads) may have played there before the name change. (It's hard to remember where Quiet Knight ended and Tut's began). I question the assertion it was ever located in the Stages/Smart Bar space. I think that's wrong.
Tuts used to live upstairs in the building at the NW corner of Belmont and Sheffield, above Dennis' Place For Games. == Bands by Decade (Done) ==

OK, I put all bands into a decade - feel free to change any I screwed up, like Soco did for [[The Cunts]]. I tend to put bands into the decade they formed, but for any bands that formed very late in the decade and didn't put out a record into the next one, I went up. I defer to you all if you would like to change. Looking for some opinions:

# I wasn't sure how to handle bands without pages or really not enough info to categorize. I made a section for bands that need more info or a page, though we can also move empty pages for bands into the decade if we know them. Some are bands I know and are obvious, some I've never heard of. Should we keep the extra section or put each empty band page into their corresponding decade?
# Somehow I didn't notice until I got to the V's that many/most bands don't have a category for the decades they were active. I have no idea why I didn't do this consistently when I made them, but does anyone see a reason to '''not''' give a band a decade category (or categories) for the years they were active?

[[User:Gantry|Gantry]] ([[User talk:Gantry|talk]]) 08:06, 7 August 2016 (CDT)

:Nice job! It looks great. About the extra section; I personally like it this way. We don't know all the bands and in which decades they were formed anyway. So I think one of our main goals should be to add those articles. And about #2; I'm not sure, to be honest. We do know what categories the bands should be in, now that we already have four sections on the main page. So adding the categories would be easy. I don't see a reason not to give a band a decade category, but I also don't really get the purpose, now that we have those sections on the main page. [[User:AnarchistiCookie|AnarchistiCookie]] ([[User talk:AnarchistiCookie|talk]]) 16:35, 7 August 2016 (CDT)

:: OK I moved all the unmade pages to the More Info section, there were a few bands that had virtually no info in their page that I put in the 80s for some reason, so if you see a straggler page with squat info move there. As for #2 - there isn't a grand point. I will say the 1980s category and the like will encompass not just bands, but venues, records, people etc. So while not terribly useful, I'll probably add a category for each decade a band was active to their page as I see them. Had a bunch not already been done, I would have been fine with not having. But since I started I might as well be consistent. Small issue either way [[User:Gantry|Gantry]] ([[User talk:Gantry|talk]]) 18:38, 7 August 2016 (CDT)

== Date Cutoff ==

At this point I'm pretty much open to whatever people want to add to the site. I personally think a respectable chunk of the 70s & 80s stuff has been covered - so adding 90s bands has been a slow and steady process, folks like [[User:Soco79|Soco79]] have been a big help in that regard and the site is clearly better for it. My biggest concern early on was people adding their own current band info to spam, but while that happened slightly, it's clear that this isn't going to be a huge concern. People have social media for that now, not worth their time. So please, add any information on Chicago Punk that you see fit, the more the merrier. === Older Date Cutoff Discussion ===
Do you really want to limit it to pre 1990? Lets bump it up to 1997.. like ten years ago? What do you think? [[User:Xsxex|Xsxex]] 11:37, 2 February 2007 (CST)

: In the [http://punkdatabase.com/wiki/index.php/ChicagoPunk:About About Page] I kind of "bumped up" the cutoff date to [[Naked Raygun]]'s breakup in [[1992]]. Nothing is really formal, but I'd prefer most of the info to deal with bands that got their start in the 80s or early 90s. I'm not really going to stop anyone from making pages, but for now there's so much to add for the early scene that I'd prefer to keep the scope there. If things keep taking off the way they have been (thanks Patrick and Bryan K!) then I'll likely expand the scope later on and include more of the 90s scene. Just for the record, even though i love old punk, new punk is still touring and artists careers are out there so i would have thought it would be equally important to get new bands names out there. just a thought. [[User:Dr tv|Dr tv]]

: I love new punk as well, but the current bands have TONS of sites devoted to them. Not to mention that if this site started focusing on newer bands, people would come in simply to promote their own band. My intention for this site is to get info on bands that have little-to-no presence on the Internet, I don't think people are going to come here to look up new bands since they all have MySpace pages, people actively promoting them online via message boards, music sites and the like. == Facebook ==
Woah, looks like its been ''quite'' a while since I've last logged in. This website is still a really awesome resource. As I've aged, I think I've matured slightly, and I think I understand where [[User:Gantry|Gantry]] is coming from, however, I do think that since this site does seem to have become somewhat stagnant in recent years, and does need some updating, maybe it is time to extend the year parameters a bit. Maybe through 1998, wihch is 15 years ago? Or how about 1993, 20 years ago? Also, I think its probably time to make a facebook page for this site, and try to renew interest and get more content. Actually thinking about it more, I think 1993 is a good cut-off year, 20 years being a good amount of time for any phenomenon to become "vintage" enough to be included with the rest of the Chicago Punk Rock history. Thoughts? --[[User:Xsxex|Xsxex]] ([[User talk:Xsxex|talk]]) 15:40, 4 September 2013 (CDT)
: Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me tbh (yeah this reply is like 3 years too late. Who cares?). == Bands by Decade? ==

The bands list is getting big, should we maybe separate Bands into 70s Bands, 80s Bands and 90s Bands? For the sake of consistency a band falls into the decade in which they originally formed. Think it would cosmetically looks better and make it easier for first-timers to the site to find bands that correspond to the decade they were most active. [[User:Gantry|Gantry]] ([[User talk:Gantry|talk]]) 09:27, 21 July 2016 (CDT)
: I like that idea, but what about the decade in which the band was most active? Like, a band that was formed in 1989 but played until 1998 is obviously a 90s band. But the idea itself is good imo. [[User:AnarchistiCookie|AnarchistiCookie]] ([[User talk:AnarchistiCookie|talk]]) 12:28, 21 July 2016 (CDT)
:: Makes sense if they are right at the cusp, [[Lawrence Arms]] for example that SoCo79 is working on. I'll make them 2000s. In general though I'll do formation year. [[User:Gantry|Gantry]] ([[User talk:Gantry|talk]]) 14:33, 21 July 2016 (CDT)
::: Just a comment... I was somewhat hesitant to add Lawrence Arms at all since they officially formed in 1999. My decision to do so was because they are a Brendan Kelly band - frontman for [[Slapstick]]... [[Slapstick Family Tree]] - and because of their endurance and that he and that both bands are so revered by the scene. In general though, my cutoff date probably lies a little earlier than the very edge, but given certain circumstances like those of The Lawrence Arms I felt the need to be flexible. Based on journalistic decade categorization, though, they are indeed a 2000s band like Anarchisti affirmed.
:::: For the unofficial record, though, I like the idea regarding the decade categorization of 70s, 80s, and 90s, but, and despite my addition of The [[Lawrence Arms]] officially formed in 1999, included with hesitancy but went ahead and did so for the reasons stated, do we want to include a 2000s category?? Now that we are in 2016 and the 90s scene had a lot to offer, I think it's a good idea to officially graduate this Chicago Punk Archive to a 70s - 90s wiki, but I think we should leave out a decade that doesn't have enough journalistic distance to reflect back on - keeping in mind, this is just my 2 cents and that's about all it is worth!, as I am the one who included an entry for [[The Coughs]] which doesn't really belong here (a genuine thank you goes out to Anarchisti for the adjustment to that page). Just my current thoughts on the matter.
::::: Larry Arms should definitely be added based to on their influence and what spawned from it before. I'm not wholly opposed to 2000s stuff if it has merit, but don't feel a pressing need to add bands that didn't have any ties to what was before it. So I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. [[User:Gantry|Gantry]] ([[User talk:Gantry|talk]]) 12:25, 3 August 2016 (CDT)
